Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – A two-run fourth-inning homerun gave Jacksonville State a 4-3 victory over the Alabama State softball team Tuesday evening at University Field.
“Our defense and pitchers did a good job of fighting out of some tough situations with a good hitting team,” Head Coach Telma Hall said. “We are still leaving too many ladies in scoring position in critical situations, but I'm really proud of Rachel and Brehanna today for their production at the plate. I'm happy that we played well and had errorless defense, but that one pitch in the fourth gave them the advantage and the ballgame.”
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Lady Hornets rallied back adding three runs of their own in the top of the second inning.
Bailey Patt singled to shortstop to the start the one out rally. A single up the middle by
Stephanie Hernandez advanced Patt to second base.
Rachel Mills reached on a throwing error and landed on third as Patt and Hernandez trampled home to score, taking a 2-1 lead. A
Brehanna Rodrigues single to left field scored Mills, making it a 3-1 contest
JSU recorded a run in the second and two in the fourth to take the 4-3 advantage.
Mills led off the seventh with a single to left field. A sacrifice bunt from Rodrigues moved Mills over to second base, but ASU couldn't score the runner.
Mills went 2-for-2 with a run scored; while Rodrigues added a 3-for-4 performance including a RBI to lead the Lady Hornets in the effort.
The Alabama State softball team will host Alcorn State in a three-game conference series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Friday, April 12 with a single game beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
