Outdoor Track and Field Flashback

Artrailia Lesane finished third in the Steeplechase
This is the second installment in looking back at some of the top outdoor track and field meets of the season.

AUBURN, Ala.—Against some of the top individuals the Hornets faced during the 2013 outdoor season the track and field teams were able to set 24 personal records on the second day of competition at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic.

"We did a lot of good things today, and Auburn is a place to do that," Head Coach Ritchie Beene said. "Although we have got a lot of things I am not pleased in, overall the athletes did some nice things."

The day began with the 4x100m relay race as the ASU team of Latrice Lee, Jasmine Pope, Brianna Scott-Glover and Alexis Ferebee finished 12th crossing the finish line in 47.04.

In the men's 4x100, ASU's "A" team was represented by Quantavious Lockhart, Sylvester Byrd, Ryan Hall and Shawn Lockhart, had a strong seventh place finish with a time of 41.61.

Artrailia LeSane had a personal record in the 1500m run with a third-place time of 4:42.73. She bested her old record by over two seconds.

Qunatavious Lockhart had a nice run in the 110m dash with a personal record of 14.71. He finished 18th in the event and his old record was 14.96.

Two Lady Hornets set personal records in the 400m dash. Jerrica Mahone finished 10th with a time of 55.48, her old record was 56.22. Kim Wedderburn finished 12th with a time of 55.75. Her previous best was 56.80.

Shantia Wilson and Paris Thompson also set personal records in today's action. Wilson's record came in the 800m run where she beat her old record of 2:20.39 with a finish of 2:18.90. Thompson broke her old record of 5.12m in the long jump with a jump of 5.25m in today's action.

Thompson set her second personal record in the 400m hurdles with her 1:03.08 finish. Her previous best was 1:05.72.

Carlos Flores also broke into setting a personal record with his time of 1:57.27, besting his previous record of 1:57.69.

Nine Lady Hornets competed in the 200m dash and all nine set personal records. Alexis Ferebee ran a 24.50 to lead the Lady Hornets. Jasmine Pope ran a 24.961 and Kadijah Gordon was right next to her with a 24.967. Kim Wedderburn ran a 25.38 and Latrice Lee finished with a 25.41.

The final four were Santina Williams (25.44), Tiffany Barnes (26.03), KaWandra Wiggins (26.59) and LaCresha Blair (26.68).

The men also had a solid 200m showing with four members setting personal records. Sylvester Byrd led the way running at 21.80 and JaWade Thurman's 22.06 was his best. Shawn Lockhart (22.11) and Ryan Hall (22.34) also had personal records.

LeSane turned in another outstanding performance with her third place finish in the 3000m steeplechase. She also set her second career-best time of the day with her 11:10.16 finish. Her previous best was 11:34.73 set two weeks ago at the FSU Relays.

"LeSane had a great day, finishing third in the open 1500 and finishing third overall in the steeplechase," Beene said. "It is only her second time collegiately to run the event (steeplechase) and she went from running 11:34 her first time to 11.10 this time. The sky is the limit for her."

The Lady Hornets 4x400m relay team kept the theme going by running a season-best 3:45.60, besting their previous season best of 3:48.52 set at the TSU Relays. The team consisted of Jerrica Mahone, Alexis Ferebee, Gordon and Wedderburn running the anchor leg in the seventh place finish.

The Hornets 4x400m relay team did not want to feel left out as the team finished the race with a 3:15.37 knocking off over three seconds off their previous season best which was 3:18.66 set at the Southern Invite. The team of Sylvester Byrd, Ryan Hall, Brandon Coombs and Dyrez Rebeiro finished eighth in the event.

"The 4x4 is something I really wanted to get the guys going in," Beene added. "They did a good job knocking three seconds off their previous best time. We have to keep pushing those guys and keeping them motivated and hoping as well as they did today will light a fire under them and help motivate them."

In the women's shot put Mia Mike had a throw of 12.82m which bested her previous best of 12.05m she set at the TSU Relays. Tyrisha Chambers finished off a solid weekend with a sixth place finish in the high jump with a season-best jump of 1.67m.

In the final event of the day, Paige Rankine set the final personal record of the day. She finished seventh in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:57.59. She knocked almost 16 seconds off her best time of 18:13.84 she ran at the TSU Relays.

"We are going to meet tomorrow and start working on those kinks we need to work out," Beene said. "We have a lot of things to prepare for and we are going to take those things we didn't do well today and add to it and capitalize on the things we did do well."
