ASU displaying strong team unity heading into Alcorn State match

It's not just Aaliyah Lewis who is doing the scoring for the Alabama State women's soccer team these days.

Little by little, her vivacious teammates Shelbi Vienna-Hallam and Kayla Edwards have crept higher up the SWAC individual scoring leaderboard as the Lady Hornets (8-9 overall, 5-3 SWAC) have profited from a togetherness that has help skyrocket the team up the conference standings.

While Lewis sits atop of her perch in the SWAC with 32 points, Vienna-Hallam has methodically moved up to fourth in the conference in scoring with 16 points (four goals and eight assists).  Edwards is right alongside her and in a four-way tie for fifth in scoring in the conference with 14 points (six goals, two assists).

The boost in offensive production has resulted in six straight matches in which ASU has scored at least twice.  The five-match winning streak makes ASU the hottest team in the SWAC.  Howard holds the second longest win streak.  The Lady Bison have currently won three straight.

Alabama State has become one of the strongest offensive teams in the conference.  The Lady Hornets now rank third in the SWAC in goals (26) and only trail Prairie View A&M, who leads the SWAC with 34.  ASU is only one goal behind Jackson State (27).

The Lady Hornets are also second in points in the conference with 74.  Prairie View A&M is holding the top spot with 87 points.

Alabama's State 3-1 victory against Mississippi Valley State bolted the Lady Hornets into the third spot in the SWAC standings.

The standings remain very much bundled with much to be determined.

ASU (5-3 SWAC) moved past both Texas Southern and Southern after each team lost on Friday.

With two conference games remaining for each team, ASU has 15 points while both Texas Southern (4-2-2 SWAC) and Southern (4-2-2 SWAC) have 14 points apiece.  Jackson State (4-2-1) is still in the mix with three games remaining and 13 points.

Howard (8-1-1 SWAC) and Prairie View A&M (6-1-1) will be looking to lock up the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds for the SWAC Tournament.

On Sunday, ASU will look to keep their win streak intact when SWAC foe Alcorn State (0-11 overall, 0-8 SWAC) visits Montgomery.  Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Lady Braves are coming off a 6-1 loss at Alabama A&M on Friday night.  Shaquita Kelly scored on an assist from Viktoriya Mihaylov to lead Alcorn in the match.
