Berry leads the Hornets
defenders with 92 tackles42 days. That's six weeks. That's how long it has been since the Hornets have played a home game. Sept. 27 the Hornets dropped a previously undefeated Texas Southern team 38-3 and that was the result of the last time ASU played in New ASU Stadium. This Saturday, Nov. 8, the Hornets will host Jackson State with the kickoff set for 1 p.m.Â
"It is good to be home," Head Coach
Reggie Barlow said. "Obviously we have played much better here in our own stadium and it will be a welcome sight. Our guys are looking forward to playing here in this nice stadium and playing in front of our home crowd."
Â
The Tigers are averaging 28 points per game and are led by quarterback La Montiez Ivy who has thrown for 2,473 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has also run for another 140 yards and two scores.
Â
JSU also has what may be the best set of receivers in the conference. Dan Williams has 52 receptions for 778 yards and eight touchdowns. Devin Fosselman has 270 yards and a score on 27 catches while Jairus Moll has scored four times on 25 catches for 404 yards.
Â
Marius Moore leads the Tigers in rushing with 320 yards and Rakeem Sims has 268 yards. The pair has combined for seven rushing touchdowns.
Â
"Jackson has always had tough guys who have played the game the right way," Barlow said. "The quarterback there is very athletic. He can make all the throws and has a great group of players."
Â
"They have a group of explosive receivers there that can hurt you and have some really good running backs as well. They have some big, big offensive linemen. It's going to be another challenge. Those guys are in a similar situation. It's a good team and they haven't won as many games as they would like to. I'm sure they are going to be coming in hungry to get a victory, but they are a really solid group offensively and defensively."
Â
Javancy Jones leads JSU on defense with 86 total stops (33 ua). He has a team-high 15.5 tackles for lost yardage and has added three sacks, and four quarterback hurries. Robert Porter and Preston Hughes have recorded two interceptions each while Ariane McCree has two fumble recoveries.
Â
"Defensively they are very aggressive and they get after you," Barlow said.
Â
For ASU there is no mistaking who makes the offense go and that is senior running back
Malcolm Cyrus. He has become the Hornets third leading career rusher (2,489) after his 185 yard performance last week. He comes into the game with 1,248 yards this season which is the third highest single season rushing total. He needs only 20 yards to move into second place among single season rushers.
Â
"Malcolm is just a tough player," Barlow said. "He is beat up and has been nursing an injury for the past month. He usually will come out of a game at some point during the game, but will always make his way back on the field."
Â
Quarterback
Daniel Duhart continues his move up the career ladder. He has thrown for 1,752 yards this season and now has 3,943 passing yards for his career, which places him fourth. His 4,260 total yards also has him fourth on the career list.
Â
Earl Lucas has caught 27 passes for 229 yards to lead several receivers.Â
DeMario Bell continues to be the long-ball threat for the offense. He has 26 receptions for 583 yards and four scores. His 22.4 yards per reception is one of the top in the SWAC.
Â
Kourtney Berry is closing in on 100 total tackles for the second consecutive season. He enters the contest with 92 stops (46 ua). Seven of those are behind the line of scrimmage and he has two sacks.
Â
Daerius Washington has 76 tackles. He has 8.5 tackles for lost yardage and another four sacks.
