Lady Hornets Basketball Falls to Samford in Midday Action

Jasmine Peeples had a game and career high of seven blocks as the Lady Hornets fell to Samford 56-43, at the Pete Hanna Center Saturday afternoon.

Peeples accomplished a significant individual milestone in recording her 35th block on the season and a career high.  She now has a total of 75 career blocks, moving her to the 10th spot of all time blockers.

"I thought the intensity was there with JP (Jasmine Peeples) as far as her efforts of trying to make something happened," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "I just need her to be able to score a little bit more.  She shot too many mid-range shots and I need her to get to the basket."

Alabama State had 19 off the bench points, 11 which came from sophomore Kayla Tucker and the other eight from freshman guard Shamyiah Smith in her 17 minutes of action.  The Lady Hornets had 20 points in the paint.  To add to Peeples numbers she had 12 boards to lead all players. Smith had a tremendous second frame, scoring 13 points to lead the Lady Hornets.

"We came out a little flat today," Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said.  "When you get down by 10 or 12 and then we have to fight our way back. Samford is the type of team that runs their offense and has great discipline it's really hard to overcome the deficit and that's how many points we lost by."

"I did see some spots great spots that I was encouraged about, and I thought Kayla Tucker came in and shot the ball pretty good.  But overall we just didn't match Samford's intensity and they out played and out hustled us.  Every 50/50 ball we just didn't come up with."

The Lady Hornets will take a short break and return back to the court for practice on the 26th in preparation for the opening of conference play, which is set to begin Jan. 3, 2015 against Grambling State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
