Softball Records First Victory; Dixon’s Blast Lift Lady Hornets

Box Score Down one run in the bottom of the fifth with one out and a runner on second, Alabama State's Meagan Dixon blasted a two-run home run to give the Lady Hornets the go ahead advantage.

This was Dixon's second homer of the weekend, as she hit a solo shot yesterday against North Carolina A&T. The Lady Hornets would cross the plate one more time in the fifth, as Jasmine James, who was called on to pinch run for Kendall Core, came around to score on a passed ball to give the Lady Hornets the edge 3-1.

"Meagan has always been a leader for us," Head Coach Telma O'Neal Hall said. "We want our seniors to have a memorable year. She gave us the spark."

Gardner- Webb (1-5) would answer back with a run in the top of the seventh, but Alabama State (1-7) was able to hold off the Running Bulldogs 3-2.

Rachel Mills was credited with the victory and had a no-hitter through four innings but was broken up on a GW single by Megan Champion; which turned into the Running Bulldogs first run. Mill's struck out threeGW hitter's while only giving up two hits.

The Lady Hornets managed six hits in today's ballgame, while right fielder Tacresha Favors went 3-for-3 at the plate. Valerie Centeno recorded two hits in three plate appearances for ASU.

"Our team feeds off of what our leader does," O'Neal Hall said. "I think because we're so young, we're working on coming together and we're slowly but surely making the adjustments we need to make."

The Lady Hornets will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Conway, Ar., to play in the University of Central Arkansas Tournament.
