Softball Splits Day One Of Tiny Laster Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Alabama State softball team managed to score 11 runs on 14 hits, as the Lady Hornets defeated Miles College 11-8, but fell to Savannah State 8-2 on the first day of the Tiny Laster Classic in Birmingham, Ala.

Miles College (2-14) would get first on the scoreboard first on a solo shot by Kenyana Chapman in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.

Alabama State (2-12) would answer back in the top half of the second when Meagan Dixon, who reached base on a single and stole second, came around to score on a Kendall Core double. Core would cross home plate for the second Lady Hornet run of the inning, as Diuana Nelson would also double.

"I was proud of Meagan Dixon, who has been real consistent at the plate for us so far," Head Coach Telma O'Neal Hall said. "I was also proud of Valarie Centeno for stepping into her pitching debut, altough it wasn't what we expected she was able to to give the team some motivation."

Valerie Centeno, who is an infielder for the Lady Hornets, captured her first start today going four complete innings; giving up eight runs, on seven hits, with sevenwalks while striking out five.

Both clubs would post three runs a piece in third inning, ASU got its three scores when Dixon, who doubled to reach base, would come around to score on a Yvette Ducoing double. In her next plate appearance, Core blasted a two-run home run scoring herself and Ducoing from second.

The Lady Hornets took a 5-4 lead into the fourth inning, before adding two more runs to the total. Tacresha Favors singled to left field, before Aleesa Yanez hit a two-run homer to give the Lady Hornets a 7-4 lead.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Miles would manage four runs, two by way of walks, to take an 8-7 advantage.

The Lady Hornets would have a shot at redemption in the sixth, when Raven Walker hit a lead-off single and Favors drew a walk ans stole second, before Yanez's single would bring Walker around to score. Favors would later come home on a passed ball that got away from the Miles catcher. Yanez, who advanced to second on the passed ball, would later come around to score on a double steal attempt when the Miles catcher threw down to second.

ASU would add one more run in the top of the seventh, when Core, who doubled and advanced to third on a Nelson sacrifice, came in on a Jazzmine Romero sacrifice.

"We're working to get everyone on the same page so we can put this puzzle together," ONeal Hall said. "Once we do that, we will be able to see the big picture."

In the first game of the day the Lady Hornets fell to Savannah State(5-9) 8-2. ASU got on the board first, after two hit batters and two walks brought around the Lady Hornets first score.

Dixon would add to her homerun total, bringing it to five, when she belted a towering shot off of the light pole in left center field for the Lady Hornets only other run of the contest.

ASU has one scheduled for tomorrow, as the Lady Hornets will battle Florida A&M. The game is set for 1 P.M.
