The Alabama State baseball team will play a pair of mid-week games, beginning with Tuesday's home game against Troy before Wednesday's game at Auburn.
Both contests are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday's game will be video streamed live and Wednesday's game will be broadcast live via internet radio at bamastatesports.com/showcase.
Alabama State is off to its best start in school history at 15-4 and is coming off a three-game weekend sweep of Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Alcorn State. The wins came after a mid-week home loss to UAB in which the Hornets scored just once on Wednesday.
"Among the things we addressed was the lack of focus on the offensive side," head coach
Mervyl Melendez said of the loss to UAB.  "We went to the plate without a clear plan. We addressed that on Thursday and Friday, as well as our base running. We made mistakes on the base paths not only in the loss, but in the series prior to that against Mississippi Valley that we needed to address. Those items were really hammered down in practice. We executed better offensively, especially the first game and the last game (a season-high 12 runs scored) this past weekend."
The Hornets will continue a stretch of five consecutive mid-week games against in-state opponents. For the third consecutive year, Troy (9-7) will come to Montgomery to face the Hornets. Alabama State has won both games, 4-2 in 2012, and 4-3 last year. Wednesday, the Hornets return to Auburn (9-6) for the second time this season. Alabama State won at Plainsman Park 9-3 on February 19.
"We know how good Troy is going to be," said Melendez of the defending Sun Belt Conference champions. "They are a team that is very well-coached. Eventhough they have some key departures from last year's team, they are still going to be very sound fundamentally and very talented. We need to play well against them, especially at home. We need to defend our home turf. In our mid-week game last week, we didn't have a good showing.
"With the Auburn game Wednesday and us coming out on top in the last meeting, they will come out swinging, per se,"Â Melendez said. "We need to play our game and play with a lot of intensity. I believe if we do that, we'll have a very good chance to win. We just have to play well, and do what we have done best in taking good at-bats, and playing good defense."
