Hornets Continue Road Trip At Samford, Troy

Head coach Mervyl Melendez and the Hornets to face Samford and Troy in mid-week games Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Alabama State baseball team continues a season-long nine game road trip with mid-week non-conference games at Samford Tuesday and at Troy Wednesday.

The Hornets (17-6) will face the Bulldogs (11-6) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday's action will begin at 6 p.m. with the resumption of the halted game last Tuesday in which Troy (10-8) led 8-5 after seven innings in Montgomery. The regularly scheduled game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Bamastatesports.com will have live internet radio of this week's games.

Alabama State is coming off its first Southwestern Athletic Conference road series of the season, winning two of three games over a much-improved Alabama A&M team. The Bulldogs won 5-4 in game one, before Alabama State went on to win 11-1 in seven innings and 15-5 in eight innings in the final two games of the series.

"Alabama A&M came out with a lot of intensity and a lot of firepower," Hornets' head baseball coach Mervyl Melendez said. "Although they only scored five runs, they had 13 hits in game one, performed well and beat us. I was happy with the way we came back after that. We didn't talk a lot about the game one loss in between games, but this team understands what's at stake and how they need to react. It's not how many times you get knocked down, it's how many times you get back up, and we did that over the weekend."

Samford is coming off losing a weekend series at 11th-ranked Louisville. Troy split a two-game series at South Alabama after having the final game of the series rained out.

"This is the first time we've played Samford since we've been here, but we know the type of program they have," Melendez said of the matchup with the Bulldogs, the first between the teams since 2000.. "They went to the NCAA Regional two years ago, and they have everything you need to be successful with the coaches, players and facilities they have. We know we'll be tested.

"In facing Troy again, we didn't play well last Tuesday, but we're three runs away from tying the ball game heading into the eighth inning, so we have six outs to make it happen," Melendez continued. "I feel confident we'll make a run, and then play a brand new game at their field. We just have to better than we did last week. I feel good going into this week,  the things we will see from these two teams over the next few days, and eventually get to the weekend and a big series at Jackson State."
