Softball Drops An Eighth Inning Heart-breaker To FAMU

Box Score The Alabama State softball team dropped a tough loss to the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers 12-11 in eight innings, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Tiny Laster Classic.

Down 11-7 heading into the seventh inning, the Lady Hornets rallied to score four runs on five hits to send the game into extra innings. The scoring barrage started when Jazzmine Romero led off the Hornets half of the seventh inning with a single. The next batter, Brittney Wilson singled to give the Lady Hornets runners on first and second. Melissa Christmann grounded a sacrifice back to the pitcher and the next ASU hitter, Valerie Centeno, would blast a three run shot over the left center wall to push the score to 10-11.

After a Diauna Nelson single and a Meagan Dixon walk, Aleesa Yanez would single to bring around Raven Walker, who came in to pinch run for Nelson, and tie the ball game at 11 forcing the extra frame.

In the eighth inning, a FAMU single would be enough to bring around the go-ahead run for the Lady Rattlers. ASU couldn't answer back in the bottom half of the eighth, giving the game its final.

FAMU would get on the scoreboard first in their half of the first inning. ASU would answer back in bottom of the second when Laura Augilar's hit into a fielder's choice and Wilson, who reached base by getting hit by a pitch, came around to score as an attempt was made to Augilar out advancing to second.

The Lady Rattlers would score three more runs in the third and two runs in the fourth before the Lady Hornets would put three more runs on the board off of a Nelson homerun that would score Romero and Wilson, who both hit their way on.

FAMU would push the score to 11-4 halfway through the sixth inning, when in the Lady Hornets half of the inning, Christmann would single and Makayla Webster in pinch hit role drew a walk before a Nelson single would load the bases. Kendall Core very next at bat would single to score Christmann from third. Dixon would single in the next plate appearance to drive in Webster and Nelson giving the game it's 11-7 score heading into the seventh inning.

The Lady Hornets would scatter 19 hits over the course of the ball game but also committed five errors on the day.

Centeno, Nelson, Dixon and Romero all went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Lady Hornets, with Nelson and Romero each going deep.

"If we would take the tenacity in every inning of the game instead of waiting until the final innings we would have better results," Head Coach Telma O'Neal Hall said.

Up next for the Lady Hornets is mid-week double-header as the Lady Hornets host Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
