ASU Tennis Set to Face Troy

Assistant Coach Richard Seman (L) and Head Coach Anuk Christiansz (R) will lead ASU into Troy Friday afternoon.

After a layoff of over a week, the Alabama State University tennis teams will be back in action when they take the short drive to Troy to face the Trojans.  The match is set for Friday, March 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Troy's campus.

The Hornets (4-7) have not played since a March 9 road trip at Tennessee-Chattanooga and will be looking to get back into action in a more frequent nature with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Round Up just around the corner.  Troy (4-11) is a much stronger team than their record indicates and ASU will need to be at their best when they face off with the Trojans.

"I'm a little worried because we haven't played in two weeks and also we had bad weather four or five days so we've really been back on the court for two days," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said.  "The guys look a little rusty but tomorrow we are going to play a good Troy team so hopefully we can begin to get back into the swing of things."

An interesting side bar to the men's match will be the head coaches from both programs.  ASU's Christiansz and Troy's Scott Kidd coached together at Auburn University Montgomery where they combined to win 13 National Championships and numerous coach of the year honors, both on the conference and national levels.  The two have remained close friends even after Kidd moved to Clemson to become the Tigers Assistant Coach and Christiansz took over at ASU.  This is Kidd's first season overseeing the Troy men's program.

Kidd's assistant at Troy is former AUM All-American Victor Sanakapapi, who played for Christiansz and Kidd at AUM where he only lost three matches during his four-year career.

"It's going to be like seeing a long, lost relative because he (Scott Kidd) and I are so close," Christiansz said.  "It's not a rivalry between him and me by any stretch of the imagination because we are such close friends.  It will be good to see him and I am glad he's there and I am looking forward to it."

"It's interesting having Victor down with Scott helping him out because my former colleague and assistant coach is now a head coach and one of my former players is with him," Christiansz said.  "It'll be a little different at first because that hasn't happened to me yet so let's see how it goes tomorrow, but it will be good to see Victor as well."

The Lady Hornets (6-9) are a lot like the Lady Trojans (7-6) as both teams enter the match playing their best tennis of the season.  ASU was won four of their past six matches and Troy has won six of its past eight.

"I think the girls are meshing up well, cohesively, they are playing more as a team and we have improved in lots of areas," Christiansz said.  "They have a little more confidence each time they play so as a team the girls have grown exponentially."
