Lady Hornets Softball Pick Up Two Wins On Day Two of SWAC Round-Up

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Alabama State's Softball team took two games on the second day of the SWAC Round-up from, Prairie View by the score of 10-8 and UAPB 10-3 Saturday at the Lear Athletic Complex.
 
"Today the ladies had more energy," said assistant coach Alyssa Smoke.  "You could see the energy more in the game against UAPB, we kept pushing every single inning and that's how we got the results that we did.  Our pitching staff did a lot better job today as well."
 
In the first game of the day for the Lady Hornets, found themselves with a 4-0 deficit against Prairie View in both innings one and two.  The bats came alive in the third inning on a hit up the middle by Jazzmin Romero.  Laura Augilar was hit by a pitch to land her on base moving Romero around to second.  Tamara Williams stepped up to the plate on two outs singling to left center and scoring Romero.  Aleesa Yanez then singled to right field scoring Augilar, the ladies didn't finish there as Megan Dixon hit her first homerun of the morning session, scoring Yanez and Williams advancing the score 5-4 over the Lady Panthers.
 
The score remained the same throughout innings four through five before the Lady Hornets took the plate scoring twice in the top of the sixth.  Dixon reached base on a walk stealing second, before teammate Kendall Core singled to right field, Dixon advanced to third.  Romero stepped up to the plate once more doubling to center field and scoring Tacresha Favor, (who pinched ran for Core) and Dixon ending the inning 7-5.
 
Leading off the Lady Hornets seventh, Yanez doubled to left field scoring teammate Shantelle Smith who subbed in, before Dixon hit her second homer of the game scoring two more runs to give ASU a 10-8 lead for good.
 
Dixon went 2-for-3 driving in five runs, while hitting her seventh homerun of the season.
 
"Meagan is our senior and she leads the team in pretty much every category," Smoke stated.  "When she's going and her energy is up then the rest of the team follows."
 
Picking up from the momentum of game one the Lady Hornets took a 3-1 lead in the first inning, with
Williams leading off by being hit by a pitch, before Yanez singled to right field, advancing Williams to second.  Dixon hit her third homerun taking ASU into the second inning up by two. 
 
The next inning saw no change in the score, before ASU entered the third inning on a scoring frenzy.  Yanez took the lead being hit by a pitch, before getting out at second on a fielder's choice allowing Dixon to reach first base.  Diauna Nelson making her first appearance today hit a single up the middle advancing Dixon to second, off the next batter both Nelson and Dixon moved around the bases on a passed ball.  Core hit her first homer of the day scoring three more runs to give the Lady Hornets a 6-1 lead.  After a pitching change by the Lady Lions, ASU's Romero doubled to left center, while Brittney Wilson with her first at bat was walked.  Augilar was also walked advancing Wilson to second and Romero to third.  Valarie Centeno reached base on a fielder's choice adding another run, before Romero scoring in the same segment on a short stop error.   The Lady Hornets scored twice more before ending the inning with seven runs and four hits.
 
"In order to keep the momentum up that we had today, we must keep having fun and then the success will come," said Smoke.  "We are working on staying positive and focused and like I said before keep having fun.  Even if we are losing I would like for us to continue the confidence that we have so that we can keep having fun and win."
 
The Lady Hornets will return to the field for a 10 a.m. pitch against Southern at Lear Field in Longview, Texas.
