Lady Hornets Bowling Advances To The SWAC Championship Game

For the first time in school history Alabama State will compete in the SWAC Championship against state rival Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. at the Bowling International Training & Research Center in Arlington, Texas.

Alabama State, who received a first round bye for placing as the second seed, faced fourth seed Texas Southern in the second round after they defeated number five Prairie View A&M 4-2. The match went back and forth with the teams splitting the first two games before the Lady Tigers took game three 221-141 and a 2-1 lead. In the fourth game the Lady Hornets picked up some key pins to get a 192-184 win and tie the match at two. The Tigers took game five 186-167 but the Hornets would not go away as they took game six 189-133 to force a game seven. Alabama State took game seven 177-169 to advance and face the number one seed Alabama A&M

The Hornets faced in-state rival and number one Alabama A&M in their second match of the day. The Bulldogs took the first two games 168-162 and 220-190. The Hornets stung back taking games three and four 179-177 and 233-181 before dropping the fifth 211-175. Alabama State started off the sixth game strong but couldn't hold on as Alabama A&M won 183-161 and took the match 4-2.

"We were too comfortable and relaxed against Texas Southern. They bowled much better than yesterday and it showed with the match going seven games," said Head Coach Andrew Chatmon. "Alabama A&M is a great team, they really showed up to bowl. We had several games won, but in the last two to three frames they pulled it out by throwing straight strikes and we couldn't do anything about it. "

Alabama State went head to head with Jackson State in an elimination match. Alabama State took game one 191-173 but Jackson State made it known that it wasn't going to be easy as they took game two 215-167.  Alabama State came back to take game three and once again Jackson State responded with a win of their own. With the match tied at two games a piece the Hornets were looking for a strong finish which they got with a 185-159 win. Going in to the sixth game the Hornets were looking to end a long day which they did with a 193-175 win. The Hornets took the match 4-2 and will advance to the Championship match on Sunday to face Alabama A&M.

"I am extremely proud of the girls today they fought hard when things got hard but still made plays when they needed to." Stated Chatmon in closing.
