Strong Pitching Carries ASU Softball To Wins At SWAC Round-Up

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 On the efforts of pitchers Melissa Christmann, Valerie Centeno, and Shantelle Smith halted a late Southern scoring threat in game one and allowed Texas Southern only one run in game two giving ASU two more wins during the SWAC Round Up.  The team ended the round-up with a 4-1 record on Sunday.

"I credit the weekend to the pitching staff and the confidence that the whole team played with," said assistant coach Alyssa Smoke.  "We had fun and we played with good old fundamental softball.  Although we lost to Grambling on the first day, we took that and came out the next two days 4-0.  I think we really played well and our pitchers did outstanding.  The made the necessary pitch changes when they needed to and defense took a stance as well."
Down two heading in the bottom of the seventh inning against Southern, Meagan Dixon stole second after drawing a lead-off walk. Dixon would come around to score on a Kendall Core single to right field, who moved to second on a fielding error by Southern. Core advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jazzmine Romero, at which point Jasmine James was called on to pinch run. The next ASU batter Brittney Wilson, on a 0-0 count blasted the ball down the right field line for a walk-off two-run home run to seal the 9-8 victory for the Lady Hornets.

"We started off a little slow, but the girls kept fighting every single inning," said Smoke. "I told Brittney to get a deep fly ball so we can tie up the game and she went above and beyond the call of duty."

Southern would get on the scoreboard first with two runs in their half of the first inning, but ASU answered back with three runs of their own to close out the first inning.

Valerie Centeno would be the first run of the ballgame for the Lady Hornets, as a Dixon double to left field would drive her in. Core followed with a double scoring Aleesa Yanez, who was hit by a pitch, and advanced Dixon to third. After a Romero pop up and a Wilson walk to load the bases, Raven Walker would get hit by a pitch that forced in Dixon for the third score of the day.

ASU would plate three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, when Tacresha Favors, who came into pinch run for Yanez, reached base after getting hit by a pitch, came in to score on another double by Dixon down the left field line. Dixon would later score, when the Southern Left fielder dropped a fly ball hit by Wilson. Wilson would later come home after Walker, who singled to third base, advancing to second on a throwing error, and got caught in a rundown at second base.

"The ladies played with confidence from start to finish and that's something we talked about coming into this weekend, even when we were down we still made plays with confidence," Smoke said    .
Game two saw Texas Southern getting on the board first with a 1-0 lead over the Lady Hornets.  Meagan Dixon led off inning two with a double down the left field line.  On a ground ball to the third baseman by Diauna Nelson, Dixon advanced to third eventually scoring on a passed ball to even the score at one.

In the bottom of third ASU picked up two more runs that were credited to Dixon who hit a triple to right field to give Alabama State the 3-1 win.
