Softball Falls To Jackson State 5-4

Box Score The Alabama State softball team fell short in a late inning comeback to Jackson State 5-4 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

Down 5-3, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, ASU was able to pull with one run of JSU, when Meagan Dixon, who reached base on single to the shortstop, came in a Kendall Core single to right field making to score read 5-4.

The Lady Hornets threatened to tie the ball game after Dixon's score with runners on second and third. Raven Walker, who was called on to pinch run for Diauna Nelson who bunted her way on, advanced to third on Core's single. The next ASU batter, Jazzmine Romero would reach on a squeeze bunt that advanced Core to third and Walker would be called out at the plate. After Romero stole second, in her next at bat Brittney Wilson would ground out to second giving the game its final.

"We didn't give up, we were in it every inning, even when they scored those five runs" Interim Head Coach Alyssa Smoke said. "We didn't execute early enough in today's game. We have to execute earlier in order be successful."

Both clubs got through the first two innings with no score, but in the top half of the third inning the Lady Tigers managed to plate five runs, on five hits.

The Lady Hornets, in their half of the third, scored twice on two hits. With one out Aleesa Yanez drove a single to center field. Dixon would draw a walk, with Nelson laying down a sacrifice bunt that advanced both Yanez and Dixon. Next, Jackson State would intentionally walk Core to make it a force out situation with two outs and the bases loaded. With the bags juiced and two outs, Romero would single to left field scoring Yanez and Dixon. Wilson grounded out to third to close out the inning at 5-2.

In the sixth, ASU would add one more run when Wilson, who reached on a single and advancing on a Laura Aguilar sacrifice bunt, would come around on a Valerie Centeno single for a 5-3 score.

ASU would out hit Jackson State 11-8, but strand 10 base runners over the course of the day.

"Even though the outcome was not in our favor, I want to the girls to focus in on this game mentally and use that as motivation as we go into the double header tomorrow," Smoke said.
