Box Score 2 The Alabama State softball team swept day one of the Hornet Classic as they beat Southern 4-3 in game one and 9-6 in game two.
Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Hornets rallied to score six runs on six hits to take a 6-3 advantage. The scoring barrage began when
Diauna Nelson led off with a double and would advance to third on an illegal pitch by the Southern pitcher.
Kendall Core followed with a double that drove Nelson in from third.
Jazzmine Romero would draw a walk in the next at bat.
Brittney Wilson, who reached on an error by the Southern third baseman, would later be thrown out at third on the same play but not before Core and Romero would cross home plate. The next ASU batter,
Tamara Williams, would reach base on a single and advance third on
Valerie Centeno single.
A passed ball would bring in Williams and Centeno for two more runs. Both
Yvette Ducoing and
Aleesa Yanez would single and Ducoing would come in to score on an error by the second basemen to round out the scoring half of the second inning for the Lady Hornets.
ASU would not relinquish its lead for the rest of the afternoon, despite Southern managing runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Lady Hornets added a run in the fourth, when
Meagan Dixon blasted a double that scored Ducoing and Yanez, who reached base on a single and a double, respectively.
ASU would add one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Nelson would again single to score Dixon who reached on a double.
Rachel Mills picked up her second win of the season, going 5.0 innings while only striking out two Southern batters.
Melissa Christmann was called on in relief, hurling 2.0 scoreless innings striking three while not giving up a hit.
In game one,the Lady Hornets got off to a huge start as
Valerie Centeno, the designated player, led off with a home run to tie the ballgame at one.
ASU would add a run in the bottom of the third, when Centeno, who reached on a double, would come around to score on an error by the SU third baseman in attempt to throw out Yanez as she stepped on first base.
The Lady Hornets would post one more run in the bottom of the fourth, to take a 3-1 lead when Romero, who singled, came in to score on a fielding error by the SU right fielder.
Southern would plate two more runs to tie the ballgame at three in the top of the fifth.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh with ASU runners on first and second, Dixon would deliver her biggest hit of the game, as she hit a walk-off single that scored Ducoing from third and giving ASU their third victory of the season 4-3.
Christmann was credited with her second win on the season recording a complete game with six strike outs.
Game three of this weekend series will be Sunday, March 9, at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. First pitch is set for noon.
