Softball Drops A Tough Mid-Week Loss to FAMU

Box Score The Alabama State University softball team dropped a tough 8-6 loss to the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers Tuesday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

The Lady Hornets took a 6-4 lead going into the top of the seventh inning, at which point FAMU scored four runs on three hits. Three of those runs came on a three run homer with no outs, giving FAMU the 8-6 advantage.

ASU drew first blood, when Tamara Williams scored on a Jazmmine Romero sacrifice fly. Williams was hit by a pitch in her at bat and advanced to third on two singles by Aleesa Yanez and Meagan Dixon.

Both teams would post a scoreless second frame, but find new life as they each scored two runs in the second. Going into the bottom of the second FAMU held a narrow 2-1 lead, but a double by Romero to left field would drive in Williams and Valerie Centeno who both reached base on singles, respectively, giving ASU a 3-2 lead after three.

FAMU would post two runs in their half of the fourth to regain the lead 4-3, but ASU would rally back to tie the ball game at four all, in their half at the plate. The Lady Hornets lone run of the inning came from Brittney Wilson who scored on Centeno's sacrifice fly to left field. Wilson earned her way on a courtesy walk by the Lady Rattlers pitcher.

Each club went scoreless through the fifth, but ASU managed to regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth, when Tecresha Favors, who was called in to pinch run for Kendall Core which drew a walk, crossed home on a Laura Aguilar single through the left side. The Lady Hornets next score came when Wilson, who bunted a singled behind Core, scored on a Centeno single to center. That would be the largest and last lead of the night as FAMU was able to hold onto the lead that they regained in the top of the seventh inning.

Centeno lead the way at the plate for the Lady Hornets going 2-for-3, with one run scored and two RBIs.

"Execution, top and bottom, pitching, defense and hitting throughout the entire seven innings is what we need on a consistent basis," assistant head coach Alyssa Smoke said. "We were better today with runners in scoring position than we were over the weekend, we executed better in that phase of the game but we have to have a complete game."

Up next for the Lady Hornets will be a weekend conference series as they host Mississippi Valley.  The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for6 p.m., with a double header scheduled for noon start on Saturday. This will also be senior day for the Lady Hornets, as they will honor the seniors prior to Saturday's first pitch.
