Lady Hornets Softball Sweeps Alabama A&M

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Alabama State University softball team swept the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M at the Alabama A&M Softball Complex.

GAME 1- ASU 6 AAMU 3: With the ballgame tied at two all heading ino the seventh inning, the Lady Hornets scored four runs on six hits to take a 6-2 lead and eventually finish off AAMU 6-3 to take game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Valerie Centeno led things off with a single, followed by Tamara Williams and Aleesa Yanez who also hit singles. Centeno would be thrown out at home on Yanez's single. Meagan Dixon followed with a single that scored Williams. A sacrifice fly by Jazzmine Romero would score Yanez, giving way to Kendall Core who blasted a two-run homer in the seventh.
 
The game was scoreless going into the third inning, until ASU managed to plate a run to get on the board first. Dixon, who reached base on a fielder's choice and later stole second, came around on a Romero single to center field.
 
The Lady Hornets scored once more in the fifth, when Williams crossed home off of a Dixon sacrifice bunt. Racheal Mills was credited with the victory. The Lady Hornets scored six runs off of 12 hits.
 
GAME 2- ASU 15 AAMU 5: The Lady Hornets turned in an 11-run second inning that would force the eight-run rule to preserve the weekend sweep over the Lady Bulldogs.

Romero got things started for the Lady Hornets, after an error by and a Core double, Brittney Wilson doubled to center field bringing in Romero for the first run of the inning. Next, Laura Augilar would fly out to left field for the first out, followed by an error on the AAMU second baseman off of the bat of Centeno that scored Core and Wilson.
 
Yanez was hit by a pitch, which scored Yvette Ducoing, who was also hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Two more ASU runs would come in, as Dixon singled. Two more AAMU errors would give way to three more ASU runs. A single by Augilar scored Ducoing to round out the scoring onslaught by the Lady Hornets.

Diauna Nelson hit a solo homer in the fourth for the only ASU run of the inning. The Lady Hornets added three more runs in the fifth, as Romero scored on a Core single.  A Wilson double would score Core and Wilson would close out the scoring coming in off of a Nelson single.
 
The Lady Bulldogs managed five runs through the second, third and fourth innings but were unable to match the offensive production by the Lady Hornets.

Next up for the Lady Hornets will be a conference weekend series against Alcorn State, as ASU will travel to Lorman, Miss. Game one will be on Friday, April 18th at 2 p.m., with a double header on Saturday.
