Softball Drops Game One To Alcorn State

Box Score The Alabama State softball team dropped a tough loss to the Alcorn State Lady Braves 5-1.

The Lady Hornets snapped a six-game win streak Friday against Alcorn State. The Lady Hornets trailed by four runs going in to the seventh inning, and could not manage to get any closer as Alcorn State closed the game out with the victory.

Jazzmine Romero started things off for the Lady Hornets in the top of the seventh with a lead-off double, but a pop-up by Kendall Core, a fly out to the left fielder by Brittney Wilson and a strikeout by Diuana Nelson would end any ASU attempts at a comeback.

Both clubs went scoreless through the first two innings, but in the bottom of the third Alcorn State managed to plate two runs on two hits for the first lead of the day.

ASU would answer back with a run in the fourth, when Meagan Dixon who reached base on an error by the Alcorn third baseman would come into score on a Kendall Core single to left field.

Despite collecting six hits, the Lady Hornets was only able to score the one run.

Alcorn State scored three more runs in the fourth to give the game its final score.

"We came in expecting to win instead of having the intent to win," Assistant Head Coach Alyssa Smoke said. "After the game we discussed resiliency and playing with 100% effort despite the caliber of the opponent. We look forward to the change attitude tomorrow."

The Lady Hornets will continue its action Saturday for a double header in Lornan, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
