Softball Splits Double Header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LORMAN, MISS. - The Alabama State University softball team split the weekend double header against Alcorn State.
 
GAME 1- ASU 11 ALCN 6: Taking a 10-4 lead into the sixth inning ASU plated another run as Tamara Williams, who led off with a double and stole third, scored off of an Aleesa Yanez single to center field for the Lady Hornets 11th run of the game. Alcorn scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to give the game its final tally.

ASU got on the board first with a four-run first inning. Valerie Centeno, who led off with a single, scored on a Yanez single to right field. Jazzmine Romero and Meagan Dixon both singled to load the bases, giving way to Brittney Wilson, who was hit by a pitch to bring in the second ASU run. Yvette Ducoing would double down the first base line scoring Romero and Dixon.

In the second inning, Centeno would draw a walk and Yanez would triple to left field scoring Centeno. Dixon, in her next at bat, blasted a two-run home run to extend the ASU lead to 7-0. The Lady Braves plated one run in their half of the second inning.

The Lady Hornets turned in three more runs in the third as; Ducoing scored on a Centeno single to left field. Laura Augilar scored for the Lady Hornets on Williams sacrifice to second base. Centeno's run would be the last run of the inning for ASU, as she scored on another Yanez single.

Alcorn State scored three runs in the bottom half of the third on three hits, while stranding two runners.

Yanez went 4-for-4 on the day for the Lady Hornets, with two runs scored and four RBI.

GAME 2- ASU 3 ALCN 7: The Lady Hornets struggled offensively, only registering four hits, as Alcorn was able to come away with the victory.
 
The Hornets got on the board first, as Centeno came around on a Yanez single. Dixon would follow with a walk and she and Yanez would advance on a double steal call. Romero's walk led to Kendall Core's fielder's choice that would score Yanez.
 
ASU got one more run in the third, as Dixon Blasted her 12th home run of the season. The Lady Braves scored runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings and were able to hold on for the victory.  
 
"Alcorn played with a lot of heart," Assistant Head Coach Alyssa Smoke said. "There has to be some improvement for us to be effective come tournament time."

Next up for the Lady Hornets will be a mid-week match-up against Auburn. The first pitch for this game will be on Wednesday, April 23 at 6 p.m., in Auburn
