Box Score The Alabama State baseball team lost to Jacksonville State 11-5 Wednesday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Jacksonville State (18-10) got off to a fast start with five runs in the first inning and four in the second to take a 9-0 lead.
The Hornets (24-10) chipped away at the deficit with runs in the second, third and fifth innings. In the second with one out,
Emmanuel Marrero doubled down the left field line.
Branden Castro then singled to left, advancing Marrero to third but was thrown out trying to score.
Dexter Price singled through the left side ahead of
Dillon Cooper's two-run double to left center, scoring Castro and Price to cut the deficit to 9-2.
In the third,
Richard Amion walked and stole second.
Cesar Rivera walked, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Richard Gonzalez then singled to right, scoring Amion. Waldyvan
Estrada's RBI groundout to second scored Rivera as the deficit was reduced to 9-4.
Alabama State added a run in the fifth as Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch to get to a 9-5 deficit. However, the Hornets could get no closer as Jacksonville State scored two runs in the sixth for the final margin.
Estrada (one RBI) and Castro (one run scored) each had two hits, while Cooper had two RBI for Alabama State.
The Hornets return to action Sunday in a SWAC doubleheader at Mississippi Valley State at 1 p.m., with live internet radio on bamastatesports.com/showcase.
