Box Score The Alabama State University softball team traveled to Auburn for a mid-week match-up against the Tigers at the Jane B. Moore Field Wednesday.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a three run lead in the top of the first, but Auburn managed to hold off several ASU offerings through the middle innings to come away with the 5-3 victory.
Both teams went scoreless after the first two innings as pitching and defense prevailed for both ball clubs. ASU registered six hits, while Auburn tallied eight.
Auburn managed to plate runs in the first and second innings to take a 4-3 lead. The Tigers would score once more in the bottom of the sixth to push the score to give the game its final score.
In the top of the first,
Valerie Centeno led off with a single to shortstop, followed by a
Tamara Williams single. After
Aleesa Yanez struck out, before
Meagan Dixon blasted a three run shot to dead center field for an early 3-0 lead.
Dixon was big at the plate for the Lady Hornets, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one run scored and three RBI.
"To take the lead with that three run homer was the perfect start for us," Assistant Head Coach Alyssa Smoke said. "The girls competed on a level that showed maturity, aggressiveness and heart. If we can carry this approach into the tournament we will undoubtedly do very well."
The Lady Hornets will return home on April 30, as they host Jacksonville State for mid-week game at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
