The Alabama State University softball team will host Mississippi Valley for a weekend conference series April 4-5, at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. The first pitch on Friday is set for 6:00 p.m.
This will be the first time this season that the Lady Hornets will face the Devilettes, since squaring off for the conference title last season in the 2013 SWAC Tournament. Valley was able to come away with the victory over ASU 11-3.
In the previous meeting, ASU managed three runs, on seven hits but couldn't get past six costly errors, stranding 10 base runners. In last season's championship match up, senior outfielder
Meagan Dixon went 2-for-3 at the plate; while Valley's Yasmine Battle was 4-for-5.
Defensively the Lady Hornets will face a Valley team that is hitting .231 and are led by sophomore outfielder Jahcenda Moffett, whose hitting a team high .308, with 24 hits on the season.
"We're continuing to improve on making adjustments sooner at the plate, however we need it to carry over to our defense and especially our pitching," Assistant Head Coach Alyssa Smoke said. "Valley will test the mental strength and toughness of our pitchers. If we can continue our progress at the plate and make the necessary defensive adjustments we will be successful."
This weekend's series will have serious implications, as Valley holds a one game lead in conference standings over ASU.
