The Alabama State University Lady Hornets softball team will travel to Decatur, Ala., as the number two seed in the Eastern Division for the 2014 SWAC Softball Tournament at Wilson Morgan Park May 7-10.
The Lady Hornets finished their regular season campaign with a 16-23 overall record, and an 11-6 conference mark.
"We are coming into this year's tournament ready to compete and we will be aggressive," Assistant Head Coach Alyssa Smoke said. "We have our eyes on Saturday; however we have to take it one game at a time."
As a team, ASU has been at the top of all the major statistical categories in the SWAC. The Lady Hornets finished 2013 first in homeruns (29), homeruns per game (0.74), batters hit by pitch (40), slugging pct. (.482), second in doubles (57), in runs batted in (195), second in total bases (484), third in hits (322), runs scored (216).
ASU had two players to receive postseason honors for their efforts on the field. Senior
Meagan Dixon was recognized as the 2104 SWAC Player & Hitter of the Year and freshman third baseman
Kendall Core was chosen for First Team All-SWAC.
The Lady Hornets will face the third seed Western Division Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers Wednesday, May 7, at 5:00 p.m. in opening round action.
"Prairie View is our first opponent and we can't take them lightly," Smoke added. "We're looking to play hard, hit the ball well and take care of business defensively. Then we will move on to the next game."
