When kickoff for tomorrow's Prince Hall Mason's Americanism Football Classic kicks off tomorrow at New ASU Stadium, there will be two teams looking to keep their undefeated conference records intact. ASU (3-1/2-0 SWAC) enters the game as the top team in the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) while Texas Southern (4-0/2-0 SWAC) stands atop the West Division.
Â
TSU entered the season on the heels of a 2-9 2013 year and have had an early season turnaround as they are averaging over 40 points per game during their four game winning streak.
Â
"Texas Southern is a team that is riding pretty high and they're 4-0 right now," Head Coach
Reggie Barlow said. "They started off with a big win over Prairie View which is a big rivalry for them. They got a big victory last week against Alabama A&M and it's good to see the turnaround."
Â
"Last year they didn't fare as well. I think Coach Asbury has been working to get his guys in there and for them to develop the mindset he has and its going good so far."
Â
Daveonne Porter leads the Tigers in rushing with 417 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry and he has five touchdowns. Jamal Small and Homer Causey are sharing time at quarterback through the first four games. Small has thrown for 528 yards and seven touchdowns while Causey has thrown for 304 yards and three scores.
Â
The quarterbacks have some talented wide receivers to throw the ball to led by Malik Cross. He has 17 receptions for 186 yards and four touchdowns. Larry Clark is their big play receiver with 10 catches, but averages 17.6 yards per reception. Porter also has 10 catches out of the back field for 81 yards and a score.
Â
Darian Claiborne, a Texas A&M transfer, leads the Tigers on the defensive side of the ball. He has 28 tackles (11 solo) and has added a tackle for loss. Jarius Moore has 20 stops and Gary Holmes has14.
Â
"This team is loaded with a lot of good athletes starting with the quarterback position," Barlow said. "They have two playing the quarterback position in Homer Causey and Jamal Small. Both of those young men play and both of them are really athletics guys that can make all the throws and can hurt you with their legs as well."
Â
"Daveonne Porter, their running back, I really like this kid. He played for them last year and he is really explosive running back. He's a guy we definitely have to watch. Plummer is a good receiver and on defense they have a big time transfer from Texas A&M who was the freshman of the year in Claiborne. So along with another group of guys that has been solid for them the last couple of years. I can see why they are 4-0."
Â
The Hornets offense has been showing signs of becoming a strong offense once again. They are now averaging 34 points per game and have their rushing attack improving each week after rushing for over 300 yards in the past two games.
Â
Senior
Malcolm Cyrus is a name that is becoming well known around the nation as he leads the SWAC and is third in the FCS Division in rushing with 604 yards. He is averaging 151 yards per game and 7.1 yards every time he rushes the football.
Â
Daniel Duhart has now thrown for 733 yards and five scores while completing over 51 percent of his passes. Duhart has several big play receivers to throw the ball to led by
Nehemiah Henry's 13 receptions and 116 yards.Â
DeMario Bell is the home run hitter for the Hornets. He is averaging an unbelievable 26.8 yards per reception on 10 catches (268 yards) and has scored three times.
Â
ASU's punt return game has been special the past few weeks led by the returns of
Khalid Thomas. He has 20 returns for 290 yards, averaging 14.5 yards per return, while Bell has been solid returning kicks averaging 21.7 yards per return on six returns.
Â
Kourtney Berry continues to be one of the top defensive players in the conference as his 43 total stops (18 solos) leads the SWAC. Torrey Davis has 31 stops and
Daerius Washington has 28.
Â
The kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game can be watched live on HornetVision at bamastatesports.com.
