Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Sweeps Two Game Road Swing

Alabama State women's basketball finished up their road swing with a 62-45 win over Mississippi Valley, Monday night at the Leflore County Civic Center.

The Lady Hornets had four players in double figures. Jasmine Peeples, Kayla Tucker, and Britney Wright each had 12 points apiece, while Daniele Ewert had 11 points and eight rebounds.  Peeples led the team on the boards with 10, as she added one block to the win.  All of Tucker's points came from around the arc shooting 4-6 from the field.

"I often say that defense brings offense and the ladies did a really good job of running the offense," Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said of her Lady Hornets.  "We did an excellent job of getting the ball into the right hands.  I thought at the beginning of the game that Kayla Tucker got us off to a great start.  She hit two or three 3-point shots and that made it easier for us to get going."

"There was a combination of players that balanced the scoring out and that helps.  It's good to be able to score, but there were times that it seemed like we were letting Valley right back into the game.  We were able to go on a run and capitalize on their mistakes to pull away with the win."

Freshman Kayla Stephens didn't score, but she had six of the 40 rebounds for ASU, while Britney Smith added five.   Alabama State shot 47 percent from the field and was 58 percent from the free stripe line.  ASU scored 16 points off of the 22 turnovers that Miss. Valley committed and Alabama State had 19.

"These ladies played almost the way I wanted them to tonight," Freeman-Jackson said.  "We still had too many turnovers, but we did what we needed to do on the offensive side.  Defensively we still missed some assignments, but we forced them to turn the ball over and we got what we were looking for and that was a win."

In the first five minutes of the game, ASU jumped out to an early 12-4 lead never looking back and taking control of the game.  The Lady Hornets closed out the first half with a 15 point lead (31-16).

"The best part about the first half of how we played is that we took control of the game and we were able to take at least a 15 point lead," said Freeman-Jackson.  "I thought we took a good defensive stance and never let them back in.  We did a good job staying focused."

In the second half, Valley tried to cut into the 22-point deficit. The closestthat they would get was 13 at the 6:55 mark (50-37).  The Lady Hornets went on a final surge to close the game out.

With the win, ASU remains in first place position with a 7-7 overall record and 3-1 in the conference.  The Lady Hornets will return to the hardwood as they face state rival Alabama A&M on Saturday, January 17 for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
