Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls in Heartbreak to AAMU

On a comeback run with less than four minutes left in the game, the Lady Hornets basketball team fell to Alabama A&M 59-50, Saturday at the T.M. Elmore Gym.

Alabama State (7-8, 3-2 SWAC) cut a 12-point deficit to cut the Bulldogs lead, but Alabama A&M (4-12, 3-2 SWAC), nailed their final three free throws of the game to clinch the victory.

"We didn't step up and play defense like we should have and that made the difference in the game," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "We just didn't make plays when we needed to either. We always know when you come into a rivalry gym its tough.  This is a game that we will now have to put behind us and get ready for Alcorn."

Sophomore forward Britney Wright led the Lady Hornets with 16 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Miracle Mayo came off the bench and scored eight of ASU's final points of the game.

Alabama State went into halftime trailing 31-23, but a 3-0 spurt out of the locker room put the Lady Hornets within five.  Alabama A&M took a 5- 0 run taking their lead out to 10 within the first five minutes of the game.
The only plus for the Lady Hornets was the 14-6 offensive rebound advantage over the Lady Bulldogs.

Taylor Sippial scored her last two points with 10 seconds left on the clock.  From there, the Lady Hornets could not get anything to fall, and was forced to foul.  AAMU had four players in double figures.  The charge was led by Alganese Gatson with 14, Sippial had 12, Jaylan Snowden and Brittney Strickland had 11 points apiece.

The Lady Hornets will return to action on Saturday at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome against Alcorn for a 3 p.m. tip.
