LORMAN, Miss. – The Lady Hornets soccer team will try to keep it rolling as Alabama State heads to Mississippi to play Friday at 4 p.m. against conference opponent Alcorn State at Spinks-Casem Stadium.
Alabama State (4-8-1, 4-1 SWAC) has stiffened their defensive posture over the past three weeks, working together on the back line with freshman goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot to collect shutout victories in four of their last five matches.
Defenders
Aiyana Canister,
Emily Ziolkowski,
Shyann Cordova and
Kaedi Walther have worked in conjunction to make it tough on opposing team's offenses.Â
"We're not giving away careless goals," said ASU women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith.
"We're more organized than we had been from earlier in the year. By not giving away early goals, it has given our offense a chance to score some goals.  Kaedi [Walther] is adapting to a new position [move from midfield to defender]. Our freshmen [Canister and Cordova] are beginning to understand their roles. Emily [Ziolkowski] has been a three-year starter and has been a calming presence back there."
On the other side, Alcorn State has had difficulty in scoring goals thus far this season as the team has been outscored 33-2 inside conference play.
The Lady Braves (0-9, 0-6 SWAC) are coming off a 4-1 loss at home against Grambling State this past Sunday.Â
Alexandra Salvador did find the back of the net in Sunday's match, however, and the team threatened with 10 shots on goal.Â
In last season's meeting between the schools,
Aaliyah Lewis had a record-breaking performance as she put up a nine-point performance as part of the Lady Hornets' 8-1 victory in Montgomery.Â
The total stands as the most in ASU history for an individual in a single game.
LeadersAlabama State: Ariela Lewis and
Aaliyah Lewis (four goals apiece), Ar. Lewis (six assists), Ar. Lewis (14 points),
Gianna Guyot (95 saves).
Alcorn State: Viktoriya Mihayloua and Alexandra Salvador (one goal apiece), Yolanda Guardado (one assist), Mihayloua and Salvador (two points apiece), Rachel Lee (41 saves).
