Friday's match up will be reunion of sorts as all three of the coaches on the Lady Tigers' bench will be familiar faces.
One is head coach Kathryn Saunders, who coached as ASU head coach
Jodie Smith's assistant for three seasons prior to her taking the head spot with Texas Southern in 2014.
Another familiar face is assistant Jordan Creel, who played for four years at ASU as a defender, and graduated three seasons ago.
Adding to the Texas Southern-ASU alumni connection is assistant coach and former goalkeeper
Kylee Hathaway, who finished up her ASU career last season as the school's all-time leader in saves, shutouts, goals-against average and wins.
"It's interesting to see them all on the same sideline and it will be their first time back since they all left," Smith said. "They'll certainly know what the field surface is like, but it will be different in that they're on the other side of it now. There's familiarity with our coaching styles. Every coach likes to see that they have encouraged their players and assistants along the way and see them do well.
Smith added that this was the first time that he could remember where an entire coaching staff had prior connections with him, either as a coach or player.
However, these games will be about the players on the field.
"These will be important games for us in leading into the tournament," Smith said.
"Both teams play with a similar style with how we'll approach the game. Now, our goal is to lock up the third seed for the tournament."
Texas Southern has lost three of its previous four matches, but has fought closely in all of them including a 3-2 defeat at Jackson State this past Sunday.
The Lady Tigers currently occupy the seventh slot in the SWAC standings, but have outscored opponents 19-11 inside conference play.
On Sunday, ASU will face a Lady Panthers' team that has outscored opponents 25-10 inside conference play.
However, Prairie View is just 3-3-1 away from home.
With a goal in Sunday's match at Mississippi Valley State, ASU junior forward
Aaliyah Lewis went over the 100-point career plateau by picking up her 40
th career goal.
AA. Lewis has five goals and three assists in 12 matches for the 2015 season.
Her 21 career assists gives her 101 career points at Alabama State.
