ASU Golf Sets 54-Hole Record in Winning Skyhawk Classic

BUCHANAN, Tenn. – The Alabama State men's golf team turned in a record-setting performance in winning the Skyhawk Classic for the second consecutive season.

The Hornets shot a three-day total -18 under, 846 (284-279-283) breaking the old 54-hole mark of 852 set this past spring when they won the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship.

Branson Ferrier (65-67-70) and Francis Berthiaume (70-68-68) finished one-two in the Classic with Ferrier's -14 under four shots better than Berthiaume's -10 under.  It is the second tournament Ferrier has won this fall after also winning the Murray State Invitational.

Mbongeni Maphosa (74-72-74) finished tied for 11th with a 220 and Edd Hackett (78-72-71) was one shot back with a 221.

Charles Griffin (75-76-75) moved up 10 spots to finish 25th with a final score of 226.  Ian Mmbando (75-75-78) finished tied at 32nd with his 228.

"The guys kept calm and repeated as Skyhawk Classic Champs," Head Coach Dr. Gary Grandison said.  "They ended the fall season on a high level.  I'm looking to a better spring than last season."

ASU played in four tournaments this fall and finished in the top-10 in all four.  That includes finishing first in two tournaments.

Host team Tennessee-Martin (853) finished second behind ASU by seven strokes.  Following UTM was Murray State (858), John A. Logan College (895), Tennessee State (911) and Mississippi College (915).

Fellow SWAC foe Jackson State (916) finished seventh and Rend Lake College (930) was eighth.  Union University (934), another SWAC member Alabama A&M (973) and Bethel University (976) were the other teams in the Classic.

"This tournament win is dedicated to Coach Henry Duncolm that passed away last week," Grandison said.  He assisted Coach Shannon when I played for ASU and eventually became ASU's Head Golf Coach.  I always admired his character."

The Hornets will get an early jump on the spring season when they travel out to Beaumont, Calif., to play in the Taylor Made/Adidas Intercollegiate.  The tournament will take place Jan. 25-26 of 2016.
