After a late attempt at a comeback, the Alabama State women's basketball team fell to South Alabama 47-43, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Despite a cold shooting night which saw ASU make only 14-of-53 shots (26.4%) and trailing by as many as 17 points, the Lady Hornets still managed to make it a close game after a late
Britney Wright 3-point shot which drew them within 46-43 with six seconds remaining.
"We started off extremely sluggish" said Alabama State women's basketball coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson.
Wright shot 5-of-12 from the field while leading the team in both points and rebounds with 13 and eight, respectively.
Jasmine Peeples finished with an impressive stat line with 11 points, six rebounds, a season-high six blocks and three steals, while playing a season-high 31 minutes.
In the third quarter, the Lady Hornets scored 14 points largely behind the effort ofhustle guards
Elisiah Jones (five points) and
Raven Russell (four points) in the quarter.
Two of Russell's six total points came off a steal after an India Hall rebound for a lay up to beat the buzzer, allowing ASU to only trail 40-27 at the end of the third quarter.
ASU struggled on both sides of the ball in the first half. Offensively, it shot a season low of 14.3% from the field and were 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Defensively, the team allowed 24 points while committing 11 fouls.
"We only scored 13 points in the first half," said Coach Freeman-Jackson.
Most notably, in second quarter, they were held basket-less for the first time this season; only scoring on a pair of free throws by Russell.
ASU was outscored every quarter except in the fourth where they scored 16 points.
Alabama State has only a single day to rest as they return back to action to host Savannah State
Saturday at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
The contest is slated for 4 p.m.
