Lady Hornets get ready for ULM Tournament

The Alabama State softball team will be traveling to Monroe, La. to take part in the University of Louisiana-Monroe Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Hornets (1-4) continue their tough nonconference schedule with games against Southeast Missouri State (0-0) of the Ohio Valley Conference on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.

ASU will also play hosts Louisiana-Monroe (4-1) of the Sun Belt Conference on Friday and Saturday directly following their first games scheduled for the day.

The Lady Hornets have had plenty of success hitting the ball thus far in the early part of the season by collectively hitting .331 as a team while averaging 5.2 runs per contest.

Sophomore second baseman Jazzmin Romero leads the team in batting average with a .600 (6-for-10) with one home run, one double, six RBI and three runs scored.

Junior first baseman Carly Evans is hitting .429 (6-for-14) with two home runs and seven RBI while sophomore centerfielder Valerie Centeno is riding a five-game hitting streak to begin the season with a .412 batting average (7-for-17) with one double, one RBI and three runs scored.

Sophomore shortstop Laura Aguilar has also done a nice job getting on base primarily from the number two spot in the batting lineup.  Aguilar is hitting .462 (6-for-13) with four runs scored and a stolen base.

The Lady Hornets will be looking to improve upon its pitching and fielding.

ASU did not meet either opponent during the 2014 season.

Louisiana-Monroe is led by Alexis Cacioppo, who leads the Warhawks with a .538 batting average (7-for-13) with a double, three walks, four RBI and a run scored.

Faith Bohack has provided the power by hitting .357 (5-for-14) with two triples, two home runs, four walks drawn and five RBI.

The Warhawks have pitched extremely well as a staff with a team ERA of 2.26.

Paige Porter is 3-0 with a 1.68 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched. Jessica Colliver has a 1.62 ERA with eight strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched.
