Game time is 6 p.m., with live stats on bamastatesports.com. All mid-week game tickets this season are just $2 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Â
Alabama State defeated Florida A&M 11-3 and 7-1 Saturday, with Sunday's game postponed in the third inning due to rain. The Hornets (3-3) had season highs in runs and hits (19) in the opener, part of a three-game week in which the team hit .394 with 23 runs scored and 14 extra base hits, including four home runs.
Â
"I believe our hitters taking a better approach at the plate has contributed to our offensive success," fourth-year Alabama State head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. "Our coaches have done a good job talking to the hitters about their at bats."
Â
Senior OF
Waldyvan Estrada and freshman 1B P.J. Harris each hit two home runs last week. They combined for 15 hits, including four doubles, and nine RBI during the week.
Â
"It was just a matter of time until Waldy found his grove," said Melendez of Estrada, the 2015 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, who had the most RBI of any returning player in college baseball this season. "P.J. has done a very good job being selective with his pitches and that has yielded very good results for him. We're very excited about him and our future.
Â
The Hornets will host in-state foes South Alabama and UAB this week. The Jaguars (4-3) have played one of the toughest schedules in the early part of the season, facing SEC foe Auburn and three ranked Top-25 teams. The Blazers (6-0) have been dominant in the first week, already with 21 extra-base hits including six home runs, and a pitching staff that has a combined 1.73 ERA.
Â
"South Alabama and UAB have always had good programs," Melendez said. "Not only do they have good players, but they're well coached also. We're looking forward to see how we matchup against them."
