Softball to host Troy in home opener Tuesday

There's been a one-week delay and two postponements because of the weather, but it looks like the Alabama State softball team may finally get to hold its season home opener against Troy in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

The Lady Hornets (3-10) will now get ready to take on another tournament-tested team in Troy (7-7).

The Trojans went 4-1 over this past weekend at home, picking up victories against UConn (6-5 and 10-0), Northern Illinois (5-4), and Evansville (3-1).

Troy's only loss over the weekend came in a 6-5 defeat to Northern Illinois.

Troy has been led by junior pitcher Ashley Rainey, who sports a 3-1 record with a 2.83 ERA.  Rainey has two complete games and has struck out 14 in 29.2 innings pitched.

Jaycee Affeldt holds the most wins on the staff with a 4-2 record and a 4.85 ERA.

Junior Kate Benton leads the Trojans with a .395 batting average (15-for-38) with eight runs scored and has been successful on seven of eight stolen base attempts.

Junior Hannah Day is next with a .333 average (13-for-39) and .438 on-base percentage.

"They're going to battle us," said Alabama State coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson. "Troy has always had a reputation for producing good teams.  They have an arsenal  of good pitchers so we have to be prepared for whatever they throw at us.  It can be a great rivalry game with us being down the street and should make for a competitive game."

The Lady Hornets are looking to bounce back after taking four losses in the Samford Tournament this past weekend.

Hitting continues to be a strength as the team now has collectively hit .314 as a unit including six players who are hitting .357 or better.

They include Carly Evans (.432), Brittney Wilson (.409), Alexis Johnson (.368), Valerie Centeno (.362), Kendall Core (.359) and Jazzmin Romero (.357).

On the mound, junior Maddie Phelps leads the staff with a 2-4 record and a 5.94 ERA.

Rachel Mills was very efficient over the weekend, going 8.2 innings with only three earned runs allowed on eight hits.  Mills struck out six and walked just two batters.
