Alabama State's Brittney Wright 27 points and six rebounds just could not transition the Lady Hornets to a win over Southern. ASU fell 72-58 in women's basketball action Monday evening at the FG Clark Activity Center.
Britney Washington scored 21 points and pulled five rebounds, while Jasmine Jefferson added 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern University.
The Jaguars improved to 15-10 overall and 13-2 in the SWAC with the victory, while Alabama State fell to 12-12 overall and 8-6 in the SWAC.
Freshman
Jameka Holmes stepped in and added her career high of 13 points and
Ashanti Spencer scored seven points.
The Lady Hornets struggled with poor shooting throughout the game. ASU went 8-24 from the field in the first half and shot just 16-44 (36.4) for the game.
ASU also committed 31 turnovers in the game. Southern had 14 steals as a team compared to just eight by Alabama State.
"We committed way too many turnovers and missed quite a few free throws," said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We have to be able to control the ball and make sure to make baskets when we need to."
The two teams traded baskets during the final minutes of play. A late jumper by ASU's
Jasmine Peeples closed out the game giving Southern a 72-58 victory.
The Lady Hornets will return home to host the two Texas teams, Texas Southern and Prairie View next weekend. The first game features Texas Southern tipping off at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
This will also be senior and Greek night. We are asking all Greeks to wear their paraphernalia.
