Tennis Teams Set to Travel to South Alabama

The Alabama State University tennis teams will be back on the court Tuesday Feb. 10, for a double-header at South Alabama.  The match is scheduled to take place at the Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.  These matches had originally been scheduled for Feb. 1, but were moved to the 10th due to the weather.

Both teams are out looking for their first win on the young season, but Head Coach Anuk Christiansz likes the way his teams are progressing.

"We are still a young team, but I am so proud of how hard these two teams are playing," Christiansz said.  "They have a great work ethic and when they get on the courts they really compete hard.  It's good to see how hard they compete.  I really think we have a chance to do some good things this season."

The women have not played since a match against Troy on Jan. 30, but are looking forward to getting back into action.

"It has been a few days since the women have been in a match and they are hungry and ready for action," Christiansz said.  "I think it speaks volumes about them when they are showing how eager they are to get back into competition and face some tough opponents."

The men are coming off a 4-0 loss to Southern Mississippi on Saturday.  It was a match which was much closer than the final score indicates.  ASU split the first two doubles matches, only to lose the doubles point at three doubles in a 6-4 battle.

The undefeated Eagles won three singles matches, but ASU had the upper hand in the other singles matches and were extremely close to upsetting USM.

"We may have lost, but we actually won," Christianzs said.  "They were so close to beating an extremely talented Southern Miss team.  The guys really competed hard and I couldn't have been more proud of how hard they played.  They know what I expect, but they are to the point where they are expecting themselves to play that hard every time out."

"South Alabama has always had strong programs and they have many trips to regionals.  Both of their teams are undefeated and their men's team just defeated 41st-ranked Drake University.  It is another match for us to play top programs which will continue to make us better.  Our teams really enjoy playing these types of matches because they know in the long run how much better it will make them."

Following the match, the Hornets will begin a three-match home stand beginning with North Alabama Friday Feb. 13 at 3 p.m.
