Baseball To Face Alcorn In SWAC Road Opener; Hornets Sweep SWAC Honors

The Alabama State baseball team is scheduled to open the road portion of Southwestern Athletic Conference at Alcorn State this weekend.
 
Sunday's doubleheader and Monday's single game are scheduled for 1 p.m. in Lorman, Miss. The Hornets were to open SWAC play at Mississippi Valley State last weekend, but weather and field conditions flipped the series to Montgomery.
 
The Hornets (7-6 overall, 2-1 SWAC) are coming off a home SWAC series win over Mississippi Valley State. Alabama State rebounded from an opening game loss Sunday to win the nightcap of the doubleheader and Monday's single game over the Delta Devils.
 
The pitching was impressive throughout the series for Alabama State, allowing just five earned runs with a 1.80 ERA, striking out 23 and walking just seven.
 
The Hornets got key hits when it counted, driving in seven runners from third base with less than two outs in 10 opportunities.
 
The Braves (5-9, 2-3) split a two-game series with Jackson State, before losing two of three to Alabama A&M. Alabama State won six of seven meetings against Alcorn State last season, including a win in the SWAC Tournament.
 
Rivera, McIntosh Earn SWAC Weekly Honors: OF Cesar Rivera and P Hunter McIntosh earned SWAC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors from last week's action.
 
The Hornets' leadoff hitter, Rivera (6-0, 205, SR, Loiza, P.R./ Bethune-Cookman) hit .471 (8-for-17) with six runs scored, a pair of doubles, and two RBI in four games last week. He had at least one hit and scored at least one run in every game, including three multi-hit games, with a .526 on-base percentage and a .588 slugging percentage. He went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in a mid-week win over Troy.
 
McIntosh (6-0, 185, JR, Columbus, Ind. / N. Columbus HS) tied a career high in both innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (seven) in Monday's win over Miss. Valley St. He allowed just three singles, no runs, and two walks in the 10-3 win.
