It's been a difficult game to pin down where and when it is going to happen, but it appears that the teams will finally get together to play it.Ā Ā Ā
After two rescheduled dates, the Alabama State softball team will meet Grambling State in a SWAC showdown on Saturday at 2 p.m. in its' new neutral location of Madison, MS, at Madison Central High School.Ā
The game was originally planned for last Saturday, March 21 in Longview, TX.Ā
Rain pushed the game to Monday in Conroe, TX, but that didn't work because teams in the conference needed to be matched up with who were scheduled to be off on the same bye weekend.Ā
ASU and Grambling State both had the weekend of March 28-29 open so the schedule was changed once again.Ā
Alabama State (9-22 overall, 3-1 conference) was able to take three of four games in the SWAC Round-Up against West Division opponents in Conroe, TX,Ā on MondayĀ andĀ Tuesday.
It gave the Lady Hornets a boost in the all-important conference standings that will determine SWAC Tournament seeding when play begins in early May.Ā
Now, ASU holds first place to itself in the East Division with a one-game lead over Alabama A&M, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State.
Plenty of Lady Hornets' hitters are hot right now.Ā Ā
Ā
They include
Alexis Johnson, who extended her reached base streak to 24 straight when she hit a combined 4-for-12 in the SWAC Round-Up including her conference-leading sixth home run of the season.Ā
Johnson also drew two walks, clubbed a pair of doubles, scored three times and drove in six runs against Prairie View A&M, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Southern and Texas SouthernĀ on MondayĀ andĀ TuesdayĀ in Conroe, TX.Ā
Jenna Mae Thorne, the reigning SWAC Hitter of the Week, stayed hot by batting 6-for-11 with five runs scored, a RBI, two stolen bases, three walks, a hit by pitch and her fourth triple of the season.Ā
The Lady Tigers (3-18 overall, 2-2 SWAC) split their SWAC games on Monday and Tuesday by defeating Alcorn State 8-1 and Mississippi Valley State 7-5.Ā
It dropped games against Alabama A&M 12-5 and also lost to Jackson State 7-0.Ā
The Lady Tigers hit .245 as a team and are led by freshman Nicole Ene, who is hitting .461 (24-for-52) with 14 runs scored.Ā Ā
Ene has shown her speed on the base paths as well as she has successfully stolen eight bases on eight attempts.Ā
However, power has not been a strong suit for Grambling.Ā Collectively, the team has hit just two home runs.Ā
In the circle, they are led by sophomore Nicolette Wunderly, who sports a 3-8 record with 44 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched to go along with a team-best 4.96 ERA.
In last year's meeting between the teams, ASU led Grambling 3-2 before allowing an eight-run sixth inning and lost 10-3.
Aleesa Yanez had herself a big day as the catcher went 3-for-3 with a RBI.
