ASU seeks to firm up playoff positioning; takes on Alcorn State

The Alabama State softball team will be seeking to lock down the number two seed in the SWAC East Division as it hosts Alcorn State for a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. for a doubleheader at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex

The series will conclude Saturday with the third game beginning at 1 p.m.

"We need to play hard and finish the regular season strong," said ASU softball coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson.

"This is the time of the season that you've got to put everything together.  Alcorn will challenge us offensively and we will need to be ready to play."

The times have been rearranged and are tentatively scheduled with impending rain in the forecast moving in on Saturday.

It will be Youth Weekend as youth softball teams may sign up to take the field with the ASU Lady Hornets as starting lineups are announced prior to the start of Friday and Saturday's games.

Please contact Lady Hornets softball coach Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson for arrangements to be made by calling 334-229-4503.

At the conclusion of Friday's second game and at the end of Saturday's game, children 12 and under are welcome to run the bases on the field.

An autograph signing session from Alabama State players will also be available on schedule posters at the conclusion of Friday's game two and after Saturday's game.

In conjunction with youth weekend, the Lady Hornets will pay tribute to those families affected by cancer with a Think Pink Strike out Cancer game.

Players will wear an assortment of pink accessories with their uniforms for acknowledgment.

The Lady Hornets (14-29 overall, 8-6 SWAC) have won two of their last three games.

Against Alabama A&M last weekend, the Lady Hornets won 1-0 in nine innings and then won 10-2 in five innings in Saturday's doubleheader before losing 4-3 on Sunday.

Not many players in the conference are hotter than sophomore utility player Perry Hindi.

The local product out of Prattville, Ala, has at least two hits in six of the previous 10 games and has raised her average from .192 a month ago on March 23 to her current batting average of .315.

Hindi is also hitting a team-best .419 (13-for-31) in 10 games played against SWAC opponents with four runs scored, two doubles, a triple and five RBI.

In the circle, freshman Chelsea King has been awarded the SWAC Pitcher of the Week honor three consecutive weeks.

King holds the best overall ERA in the SWAC (1.26) to go along with 29 strikeouts and just eight walks in 50 innings pitched.

King is especially tough against the SWAC with a 0.93 ERA with 27 strikeouts against just seven walks in 45.1 innings pitched.

SWAC opponents are batting a league low .182 against King.

The Lady Braves (2-26 overall, 0-11 SWAC) lost both games of Tuesday's doubleheader at Ole Miss (18-3, 17-0).

Alcorn is led by freshman Taylor Hughes, who is hitting .463 (31-for-67) with four doubles, four triples, 14 runs scored and 16 RBI.
