The Alabama State softball team will close out the regular season as it hosts Middle Tennessee State Monday for a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
The Lady Hornets (17-29 overall, 11-6 SWAC) enter hot having won three in a row and five of their last six games.
ASU took a three-game sweep over the weekend against SWAC rival Alcorn State (7-3, 10-0 (five innings) and 12-0 (five innings) after winning two of three games versus Alabama A&M on the previous weekend.Â
Outfielders
Valerie Centeno and
Jenna Mae Thorne each had productive weekends to lead the Lady Hornets.
Centeno, who batted second in the lineup for all three games, batted 3-for-7 with four walks, four stolen bases, six runs scored, a double, a sacrifice fly and three RBI in the three-game set against Alcorn State.
Thorne, who batted in the third position, went 4-for-9 with a walk, double, stolen base, two runs scored and four RBI.
In the circle,
Chelsea King continued her dominance with 10 innings pitched and allowed no earned runs on nine hits over the span of two games.
King (5-4) struck out a combined five batters and walked just one.Â
She earned victories in game one on Saturday and in the series finale on Sunday.Â
In the process, King lowered her ERA to a conference-best 1.05 in 60 innings pitched.Â
It will be Senior Day at the ball park as well with a special tribute planned for
Yvette Ducoing, the lone senior on the team. Â
The Blue Raiders (18-26 overall, 4-17 Conference USA) enter having lost its last two games by slim margins at Samford this past Thursday (5-4 and 5-4 in eight innings).
