Alabama State University's men's tennis historical season came to a close today with a 4-0 loss to 14th-ranked Mississippi at the 2015 NCAA Regional Tennis Tournament.
Â
"I can't tell you how proud I am of how the men played today," Head Coach
Anuk Christiansz said. "It was more of a battle than the scores indicate, especially in doubles play."
Â
"Mississippi is definitely the best team we have played this season and it showed. They have several players that are top-100 ranked players in the nation and they can hit all of the shots. Our guys got in there and were not intimidated and played hard."
Â
The Rebels won the doubles point, but it was a battle. Ole Miss' 43
rd-ranked doubles team of Gustav Hansson and William Kallberg won 8-1 at two doubles, and was able to win the doubles point with a hard-fought 8-5 win at one doubles. ASU's
Ronald Mataba and
Adam Coyne were even with the Rebels at seven at three doubles.
Â
Heading into singles play the Rebels only needed to win three of the six singles to finish the match and they were able to get singles wins at one, three and five to finish the match.
Â
"We definitely want to be back here next year," Christiansz said. "We know what it takes to get here and we are going to work even harder to get back to the NCAA's. They guys want to get back and I know they are going to work hard to make that happen. This has been a great season for this program and these players. It is a season none of us will forget for a while."
