NEW ORLEANS, La. – The win-loss record may not have shown it, but Alabama State head bowling coachÂ
Andrew Chatmon felt encouraged by what he saw on the lanes during day one Friday in the All-State Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational hosted by Tulane University.Â
Â
Alabama State ran a record of 1-3 on the day with a 4,730 pin count (189.2 team average) and currently stands in sixth place out of 11 competing teams in the three-day event.Â
Â
"The Lady Hornets had, execution wise, one of the best days they have had this year even though the record does not show it," Chatmon said. Â
"We were at about 80 or 85 percent efficiency. Mentally, it was light years of improvement. They were relaxed, committed and positive. We are improving every day, which is all I can ask of for such a young, but very talented team.  I am looking forward to the time when they are hitting on all cylinders,"
Â
Alabama State's lone win on the day came against UAB as the Lady Hornets easily won 1,015 to 822.
Â
Two of their three losses came by 47 pins or fewer including a loss to Louisiana Tech (944-912) and another winnable game against Valparaiso (a 998 to 941 defeat).Â
Â
ASU's lowest output on the day came against Stephen F. Austin (1,007 to 844).Â
Â
SFA leads all teams with a 4-1 record after one day of action.
The tournament will continue Saturday with traditional matches from 8:30 a.m. until around 4 p.m.
Â
The teams will then be seeded based on total pins for the bracket roundÂ
and conclude on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until around 12:30 p.m. with a best four-out-of-seven baker style matches.Â
Â
Awards ceremony is scheduled for approximately 12:40 p.m. Â Â
