Durriya Shields-Sampson had a season high of 14 points steering Alabama State women's basketball team to a 79-51 victory over Mississippi Valley State, advancing their win streak to a SWAC-leading eight games, Saturday evening at the Leflore County Civic Center.
Alabama State (10-9, 8-2 SWAC) are now 26-13 in the series over Mississippi Valley State under the
Freda Freeman-Jackson era.
Mississippi Valley (3-17, 1-9 SWAC) suffered ninth straight loss of this season.
Britney Wright produced 10 points and six rebounds, while
Jasmine Peeples added five points in limited time on the court due to both players dealing with foul trouble.
In lieu of Wright's and Peeples limited action, Shield-Sampson took the reins of ASU's offense.
The Lady Hornets' bench took over the game on both sides of the court by scoring 40 points while defensively restricting Mississippi Valley's bench 0-9 from the field not scoring a single point.
Daniele Ewert led the bench scorers with nine points, followed by
Shamyiah Smith (eight points),
Ashanti Spencer (seven points) and
Kayla Tucker (six points). Starter
Kayla Stephens efficiently produced eight points while grabbing six rebounds.
The swarming defense of the Lady Hornets held the Delta Devilettes to 15-60 (25%) from the field And 3-16 (18.8%) from beyond the arc.
MVSU's Zemoria Jernigan and Christina Reed were the leading scorers of the game. Jernigan scored 19 points while Reed added 18 points and had seven rebounds.
Tucker's deep 3-pointer gave ASU its largest lead (of 17 points) capping off a 16-2 run in the first half when the score was 39-22 in the second quarter.
ASU outscored MVSU 38-8 in the paint and Alabama State never trailed in the entire game.
The Lady Hornets will quickly return to action when they face Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
