Samford used four big scoring innings to defeat Alabama State 18-7Â Tuesday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Â
The Hornets (10-8) scored in the first inning on an RBI groundout by
Carlos Ocasio, scoring
Yamil Pagan who led off with a single.
Â
After Samford (10-7) scored four in the second, Alabama State tied the game in the third. With one out, Pagan singled to left field and
Edgardo Rivera doubled to left center. Following a walk to Ocasio to load the bases and the second out of the inning,
Angel Alicea was hit by a pitch, scoring Pagan.
Chris Biocic walked, scoring Rivera, and Ocasio scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 4-4.
Â
In the fifth, Ocasio singled to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a one-out single by
Joseph Estrada. Biocic singled up the middle, scoring Ocasio for a 5-4 Alabama State lead.
Â
After Samford scored four times in the sixth to regain the lead 8-5, the Hornets cut the deficit in the seventh. Estrada tripled to center, and scored on a Biocic groundout to pull to within 8-6.Â
Â
However, Samford broke the game open with four runs in the eighth, and six runs in the ninth.
Â
Biocic drove in three runs, and Pagan, Ocasio, and Estrada each had two hits for Alabama State, which returns to action Wednesday in a 4 p.m. game against Florida A&M at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
