Conference plays opens against Prairie View A&M

MONTGOMERY, AL – The Lady Hornets (8-17) have reached the midway point of their regular season and now it's time to open up the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) portion of their schedule as Prairie View A&M will travel to the nest to take on ASU beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. start.

The weekend series will continue with a doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday from the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

It will also be Think Pink, Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend.

All fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the cause.

ASU has had recent success against the Panthers, winning both meetings with them last season.

The Lady Hornets defeated PVAMU 7-3 in Conroe, TX, during the SWAC Round-Up last March 23 and then run-ruled the Panthers 11-2 in six innings in the first game of the SWAC Tournament played in Decatur, Al, last May 6.

Though it's a small sample size, sophomore Felicia Camargo (2.52 ERA) has held the lowest ERA in Prairie View A&M's pitching rotation and among all SWAC pitchers.

In 8.1 innings, Camargo has allowed just three earned runs.

However, she has yet to record a single strikeout.

As a team, the Panthers have struggled in that category as well with the team only combining to strike out 20 batters through 89.1 innings pitched.

Offensively, freshman Daneisha Hinton is off to a strong start for the Panthers as she is batting .350 with a .447 on-base percentage, one home run and seven RBI.

ASU will counter with senior Maddie Phelps, who holds a 3.32 ERA and leads the conference in wins (five), strikeouts (49) and innings pitched (76).

At the plate, Jenna Mae Thorne remains one of the most consistent players in the SWAC as the senior leads the conference in hits (33) and total bases (45) and is tied for second in runs scored (16).

Admission to all of the weekend games are free.

Hit parade
Senior catcher Aleesa Yanez recorded a hit this past Saturday at Belmont to pass Telma O'Neal for sixth all-time in hits with 148.

O'Neal played with the Lady Hornets from 1998 to 2001 and eventually would coach the team for eight seasons.

Yanez is batting .282 on the season with nine runs, one homer and 10 RBI.

Buh bye!
Maddie Phelps continued her climb up all the all-time strikeout leaders list when she recorded six strikeouts in last Saturday's game one at Belmont.

Phelps struck out six batters to total 95 in her career at ASU.

In the process, she passed Bailey Pratt (who played form 2012-2013) for eighth all-time in the category.
