MONTGOMERY – It was not a good weekend for Mississippi Valley State to visit Montgomery as the Alabama State University starting pitchers may have had their best weekend this series and that was no different in today's 11-3 win.
Â
ASU starter
Hunter McIntosh (2-1) delivered a winning performance going 8.1 innings and only allowing six hits and three runs, one earned, in the win. He finished with seven strikeouts and only walked one batter.
Â
"Another good pitching performance from our starter," Head Coach
Mervyl Melendez said. "It was good to see Hunter pitch that well."
Â
The Hornets actually fell behind after three batters had come to the plate. With one out to start the game Drew Wheeler was able to reach base via the first of two ASU errors and Arrington Smith was able to get a pitch up into the wind that was blowing out in right field and just cleared the fence for a quick 2-0 lead.
Â
ASU would add a run in the second and three in the fourth and never looked back. Although the Hornets recorded 11 hits, only three of their runs were earned as they were able to take advantage of two costly Delta Devil errors.
Â
Chris Biocic,
Hunter Allen and
Eriq White each registered two hits as ASU's bottom half of the lineup contributed eight of the 11 hits, seven rbi and seven of the runs.
Â
"This weather and the wind, how cold it got today is kind of deceiving, but we had some key base hits, but we didn't have enough as we had some innings there where we stranded some base runners. Â I think we need to do a better job with that. But we did get some timely hitting and when it is all said and done you need to hit when it actually counts."
Â
The series sweep saw ASU run their record to 13-9 overall and 6-0 in SWAC play.
Â
Over the three games ASU's starting pitchers recorded all three wins 14 hits and five runs, of which only two were earned. They also recorded 26 strikeouts in 25 innings of action.
Â
"I think this is one of the first weekends we can say the starting pitchers actually went deep into all three of the games and five our bullpen a much needed rest," Melendez said. "After playing six games last week we needed to rest some arms and because of the job our starting pitchers did we were able to do that."
Â
"I think our bullpen only pitched 1.2 innings this entire weekend. That's a pretty good weekend for our starting pitching. A lot of credit to those guys, Camacho, Howe and McIntosh pitched well."
Â
The Hornets will travel up the interstate Tuesday when they face Auburn University at 6 p.m.
