KENNESAW, GA. – For the first time in 13 seasons, the Alabama State softball team has their sights set on finishing above the .500 mark.
Â
In order to accomplish that feat, the Lady Hornets must, at least, split their final eight games in the regular season and then win at least two playoff games in the SWAC Tournament to ensure that they will finish with a winning overall record.Â
Â
A 5-3 record or better over their final eight regular season games would also ensure that ASU would close the season with a winning mark.Â
Â
On tap is a Wednesday doubleheader with a first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. ET/ 3 p.m. CT. at Kennesaw State (23-19).
Â
Alabama State (21-20) will have to contend with a speedy Owls team that is ranked sixth in the nation in stolen bases per game.
Â
Through 42 games, Kennesaw State is averaging 2.57 stolen bases a game and has set a single-season school record.
Â
KSU has stolen 108 bases in 126 attempts.
Â
The previous record was 74 accomplished in 90 attempts in 2015.
Â
Among the most aggressive runners are junior Taylor Denton and senior Kara Chambers, who have led the running game while establishing single-season career-highs.
Â
Denton is 27-for-28, while Chambers is 22-for-27.
Â
While the Owls lost two of three over the weekend at Atlantic Sun conference opponent Florida Gulf Coast (lost 4-0, won 4-3 and lost 8-0), Kennesaw State is 13-6 at home.
Â
Alabama State is trailing the all-time series 5-1 against Kennesaw, but defeated the Owls 4-3 in their last head-to-head meeting in Montgomery back in 2013.Â
Â
The Owls' top two pitchers have kept opposing teams at bay.
Â
Logan Viers (10-5) leads the team with 1.81 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 108.1 innings pitched.
Â
Morgan Sikes (10-4) is next in line for workload with 87.2 innings pitched.Â
Â
Sikes has struck out 53 batters and possesses a 2.08 ERA.
