MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama State softball team will have their sights set on bringing home one of its season goals: winning the SWAC's Eastern Division Championship.
Â
The Lady Hornets (21-22 overall, 12-0 SWAC) can do it simply with one more conference victory or an Alcorn State loss in conference play.
Â
However, Alcorn State (14-24 overall, 10-5 SWAC) is off from conference scheduling until next Friday at Jackson State.Â
Â
ASU holds the tie-breaker over the Lady Braves after defeating them in all three meetings in Lorman, Miss. earlier this season. Â
Â
Alabama State's opponent in the way of that will be visiting Mississippi Valley State (12-23 overall, 8-7 SWAC), who currently sits in third place in the SWAC East.Â
Â
Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m. while the home finale will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. from the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.Â
Â
The Lady Hornets still led the SWAC in batting average (.304), are second in the conference in ERA (4.31) and rank third in fielding percentage (.948).
Â
The Devilettes rank third to last in batting average in the SWAC (.262), but have shown solid power with 20 home runs (third in the SWAC).
Â
Ikeyia Alexander (eight home runs) and Alexandra Dobbins (six home runs) are two who have exhibited the ability to hit the deep ball.Â
Â
MVSU ranks seventh in team ERA (6.38), but top pitcher Rebecca Clinton (8-12 with a 4.70 ERA) remains of the best innings eaters in the conference as she ranks third in that category with 126.1 innings logged.Â
Â
The Devilettes also ranked seventh in fielding percentage (.919) and have committed the second most errors in the SWAC (84). Â
Â
There will be a Senior Day presentation in between games one and two for the nine players who will be graduating off the Lady Hornets roster.Â
