ASU salvages last game of series vs. AAMU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Alabama State softball team salvaged the last game of the series at Alabama A&M with a lightning shortened 9-7 victory in six innings to earn a split Saturday afternoon at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field.

The Lady Hornets (24-25 overall, 15-3 SWAC) bounced back after a pair of one-run defeats to A&M including a 7-6 loss in eight innings in game one on Saturday.

ASU's third baseman Kendall Core had perhaps the most impressive hitting display in a series all season for the Lady Hornets as the junior terrorized the Bulldogs by batting 9-for-11 with her seventh home run and seven RBIs in the three-game series.

Alabama State took a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning when Jenna Mae Thorne led off with a double.

Core followed with a single and Thorne scored on Charlene Castro's fielder's choice RBI ground out.

Perry Hindi came up with a big RBI double.

ASU extended the lead to 9-4 after some alert base running by Brittney Wilson, who scored after a single, stolen base and single by Aguilar.

A two-run double by Core gave the Lady Hornets some breathing room.

Alabama A&M (11-33 overall, 9-9 SWAC) got within two runs when Tiana Sanders slugged a three-run home run in the sixth.

After a tornado siren wailed, the teams moved inside the T. Elmore basketball gym and the game resumed after approximately a 50-minute delay.

Picking it up in the seventh inning, ASU added a couple of runs on bases loaded walks.

However, the game was called due to lightning in the area and reverted back to the end of the sixth for an official final.

Maddie Phelps (16-10) earned the victory after allowing seven runs (only three earned) and struck out nine.

In game one, the Bulldogs won it on a walk off RBI double by Imani Largin in the eighth to pull out a 7-6 win.

Castro and Core each went yard in defeat for the Lady Hornets.

Castro finished 3-for-3 while Core was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Castro (1-5) came on in relief to pitch and allowed three runs (only one earned) on six hits, but took the loss.
