ASU set to face off against UAB in a two-game series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team returns to action Tuesday and Wednesday as the Hornets will meet UAB in a two-game series.

Alabama State will visit UAB on Tuesday and will conclude the two-game series with its home opener on Wednesday at Wheeler-Watkins Field.

The Hornets (0-3) come into the series having dropped its season-openers to No. 6 Louisville, Ball State and No. 22 Maryland.

Alabama State nearly rallied from a six-run deficit against the Terps on the final day in Clearwater, Fla., but the rally fell just short in a 9-7 loss.

Despite the early season setbacks, first-year Hornet head coach Jose' Vazquez knows positive things are ahead for this group.

"I really love a lot of things about this team and what they have showed me," Vazquez said. "Now it's just about fixing some of the little issues to get us right back on track for this upcoming week."

Alabama State begins a stretch of six games in five days, starting on Tuesday. The Hornets will play UAB in back-to-back days, followed by a day off. Then, Alabama State visits Hoover, Ala., for the Hover Classic as the Hornets will take on Iowa and Morehead State on Friday and Saturday.

ASU gets two days off at the Hoover Classic before concluding February with a game in Cartersville, Ga., against Ohio.

Hunter Phillips paces the Alabama State offense as he is batting .400 in 10 at-bats. Phillips and Eriq White led the team in runs batted in, with two each.

UAB (3-0) comes into the two-game series with three straight wins over Creighton. The Blazers outscored the Blue Jays, 22-4, including a 14-1 victory on Sunday.

Antonio Ralat and Prince Visintainer are batting .400, with four runs scored and two RBIs each, for the Blazers in three games.

Alabama State wraps up its four-game season-opening road swing at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Regions Field in Birmingham, Ala., against UAB. The Hornets return to the friendly confines of Wheeler-Watkins Field for their home opener on Wednesday against UAB.
